Spotted at the Movies: A Special Edition of Bremont's U2/51-Jet Was Designed By Tom Hardy.
The dark, gritty world of Venom is due to hit the Silver Screen this October. And with over 64 million views of the trailer within 24 hours of its release on YouTube, it looks set to be one of the biggest films this year.
But one question we had was: which watch (easy for you to say) would Tom Hardy wear to portray this enigmatic antihero who has a penchant for snacking on human skulls?
Well, now we have our answer. And it comes in the form of the equally dark and brooding Bremont U2/51-Jet: a beautifully macabre-looking timepiece for a beautifully macabre and complex character — something Tom Hardy is no stranger to adapting to, given his roles as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises and James Delaney in the BBC’s Taboo.
While the standard U-2/51-Jet is available from Bremont, Hardy also worked with the British watchmakers to design his very own bespoke timepiece — which is the one he wears in the movie. The are no others like it in the world. Which is precisely the sort of thing you can do if you are Tom Hardy.
The U-2/51-JET takes design cues from some of Bremont’s military work commissioned by the RAF’s 100 squadron members to complement their Hawk T1 jet aircraft.
The 100 Squadron was the first squadron formed for night bombing back in 1917 and its stealthy appearance led to the introduction of this ‘Jet’ black timepiece complete with black smoked glass open case back through which one can view the automatic movement.
The U-2/51-Jet, which was released by Bremont earlier this year, is a rugged pilot’s watch that encompasses the traditions of the British watchmaker’s signature aesthetic.
The auto-winding rotor – also a Bremont staple – imitates the radial engine of an aircraft, and the smoked sapphire display crystal that gives the piece the air (pun intended) of extreme visibility at extreme heights and speeds.
The watch was also originally developed as part of a collaboration with Martin-Baker, the British company that makes ejewctor seats for fighter jets.
Nick English, co-founder of Bremont says, “Tom is not only a phenomenally talented actor but is perfectly placed to bring to life this lethal protector and his struggle between good and bad.
“The jet black, synonymous with the RAF 100 Squadron, has certainly made the U-2/51-Jet Bremont’s stealthiest watch to date which we felt lent itself to the darker side of the film.
“We’re honoured to have Eddie Brock, played by Tom, wearing our watch throughout and we’re incredibly excited to see the finished product in October.”
We’re all really excited about seeing the watch in action. Maybe not as much as Hardy battling with his inner demons, the Lethal Protector and the angel on his shoulder. Designed to handle the extremes of fighter jet flight, the watch will now have to stand up to what could be a bumpy ride on the screen.
